Greek history from the settlement of the Greeks in the Balkan peninsula (around 2000 BC) until the death of Philip II of Macedonia (336), with special emphasis on the following topics: the texts in Linear B on the organisation of the Mycenaean states. Relationship between the Linear B and the Greek language. The class struggle in archaic Greece and its consequences. Greek colonization in the Mediterranean. The Graeco-Persian wars. The political organisation of Sparta. The significance of the reforms introduced in Athens by Solon and Kleisthenes. The Athenian Democracy, through the study of decrees voted by the Athenian Ecclesia. Introduction to Greek Epigraphy. Athens in the time of Perikles. The Delian League and the creation of the Athenian Empire. The reign of Philip II and the rise of the Macedonian kingdom. The policy of Philip II towards the southern Greeks.
